The closest that the technology has come to this is through a fax server. In this scenario you send off a document directly from your computer to a fax server. The fax server receives the document, formats it, and dials out to a remote fax number for transmission. Fax servers can also receive documents, attaching incoming faxes to e-mail messages and directing them to appropriate mailboxes.
The client software installed on the nodes (Linux, Windows, Mac, and different Unix systems) converts the user's document into a PostScript file, which is send to the fax server, along with control information about where to send it. The fax server receives the document over the network and processes it to be delivered through any number of attached fax modems.
